Pet Bathing Prevention Tips
January is recognized as National Bath Safety Month, and Pet Expert and columnist Charlotte Reed wants to remind pet
owners that it only takes a few seconds for pets or their owners to become injured in a bath-related accident.
According to Reed, “especially in the winter months, pet owners want to clean up their pets to avoid dirty and smelly
pets roaming from room to room. And, coupled with the rising cost of dog grooming, it is fairly common now for pet
owners to take the initiative and wash their own animals at home. Unfortunately, most pet owners do not think about
bath safety,” explains Reed.
Below are some of Charlotte’s bathroom safety tips:
1. Before bathing pets, gather the soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, and any other needed items
you might need before running the bath water. Place these items so you can easily reach them.
2. Safeguard bathtubs and sinks used for bathing pets by using nonskid mats.
3. For easier bathing, consider a hand-held shower head.
4. To avoid scalding injuries, check the water temperature before placing a pet in the bath water.
5. To avoid falls and slipping in the water, always keep one hand firmly around the pet when
bathing him and try to keep the pet as calm as possible.
6. Once your pet is in the bath, don't leave for any reason. A small pet could drown or break
it’s leg trying to get out of the tub.
7. If you must leave the room for the telephone or door, take the pet with you after taking the your
animal out of the water and wrapping him in a towel.
8. When bathing your pet, keep bathroom doors closed to avoid pet escapes.
9. Before leaving the bathroom, dry the floor to prevent pet owner injury.
10. Never leave a dog alone around any container of water. This includes toilets, tubs, wading pools, spas,
aquariums, and buckets.
